Map Widget Update: Use Other Map Providers & New Default Provider

Map Widget Update: Use Other Map Providers & New Default Provider

Hi everybody!

Today we are releasing a new update to our Map Widget, allowing users to use their preferred map providers, expanding the possibilities of customization and giving more freedom and flexibility for users to use the right map for their use case.

Additionally, we are also replacing the default MapBox map with OpenStreetMaps, which is free to use. In exchange, it has fewer functionalities, for example, being able to use different styles of maps.

On the left you see the Mapbox as map provider, on the right the free OpenStreeMaps as map provider.

What changed?
- The Map widget now allows you to use Google Maps, Here Maps, or MapBox as map providers using an API key
- The default map provider for any new accounts created is now OpenStreetMap.

Why?
- To expand customization and flexibility for the Map Widget
- Some map providers have additional functionalities that can be very useful for some use cases
- TagoIO provided Mapbox as map provider for tens of thousands of users for free; however, this is not scalable. For that reason, we are moving to OpenStreetMaps as the default provider for new accounts.

When will this change take effect?

- On August 12nd 2025, this change will go live. All accounts created before this date will be able to continue using Mapbox map provider for free until August 2026.

- All accounts created after August 11st , 2025 will have only OpenStreetMap as map provider, being able to connect to their preferred map provider.

How to change the map provider?

It is pretty easy. Visit the Map widget documentation > Tile Provider to start using one of the map providers above.
